When children you know are playing, are there ever times when they won’t let you play with them? Did you ever have to stay behind when they go off to run or jump or climb? Well I know that being left out or being left behind can really make a person feel angry. It’s hard not being able to play with other children when you want to. It can make you feel all tight inside.

[Sings I’m Angry]

So when you’re angry, you can be more than angry. People can be sad and scared at the same time that they’re angry. And sometimes when people are angry, they do things or say things to their favorite grown-ups or friends that they wish later they hadn’t done or said. They even make their grown-ups or friends angry at them.

Has that ever happened to you?

[Sings Good People Sometimes Do Bad Things]

You know, there are lots of things that make people angry. Did you ever bump into something or fall and hurt yourself? That could make anyone mad. Or did you ever lose a toy and have trouble finding it? I know sometimes I get angry at myself. It can make you feel made when you can’t always do the things you want to. It’s often the people that you love that can make you the maddest.

[Sings The People You Like the Most]

When you feel that way about something, it helps to talk about your feelings. But sometimes you have to cry before you can talk about them. When you can cry and tell someone that you’re angry, it can help you feel better inside. Being able to talk about important things like feelings with the people you care about means you’re growing. And you’re growing to be freer and freer.

[Sings The Truth Will Make Me Free]

Sometimes it’s hard to know the truth about ourselves. But we can often learn it by thinking and playing. I know some people that paint mad pictures to make them feel better when they’re angry. Some children tear up paper. Some clap their hands or stamp their feet really hard to help them with their mad feelings. Sometimes children can say they’re angry and tell people why. There are lots of ways to work on feelings without hurting anybody. Knowing you can stop when you’re angry is a good feeling. You see, no one is angry all the time. When you do something about your mad feelings, like telling someone or building something, after a while you stop being mad and feel like going on to do other things.

[Sings What Do You Do With the Mad That You Feel]

I’d like to sing that song again. Maybe you’d like to do something like clapping your hands or tapping your feet or singing right with me.

[Sings What Do You Do With the Mad That You Feel]

Being angry is one way of feeling. But the very same people who get angry sometimes are the very same people who love. That’s the way it is for me. And that’s the way it is for you.
