Misterogers (CBC, 1/14/1964)

Network: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
Air Date: January 14, 1964

Mister Rogers shares an aquarium full of fish with viewers as he wonders what it might be like to live under the water. He sings I Like You As You Are before lowering a model of a deep sea diver into the aquarium. He's been thinking about diving because Lady Elaine Fairchilde mentioned yesterday that she is interested in deep sea diving lessons.

In the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, Lady Elaine is dressed and prepared for her lesson but grows tired of waiting for the deep sea diver to arrive. Seconds after she leaves to look for him, the diver arrives at the Museum-Go-Round. With his student nowhere to be found, the diver goes to the oak tree seeking information from X the Owl. X suggests that the diver look at the castle where Lady Elaine runs a motel.

At the castle, King Friday directs "Mr. Deep Diver" back to the fountain outside the Museum-Go-Round where he believes Lady Elaine is waiting. Sure enough, he finds Lady Elaine there as she anticipates her diving lesson. Wearing the proper gear, Lady Elaine goes underwater but quickly emerges when she learns there are no pearls at the bottom of the fountain. Much to the surprise of her teacher, Lady Elaine emerges from her second dive with a full string of pearls. Mrs. Frogg immediately recognizes this as her own pearl necklace and the jewelry is returned to her by Lady Elaine. Back at the house, Mister Rogers concludes by singing Tomorrow.

Notes

Approaching the oak tree, the diving instructor finds a note on X the Owl's door: "Knock 5 times for X-formation." X promptly answers the door, but the instructor only knocks four times.

Although an actual name for the diving instructor is not mentioned in this episode, King Friday addresses him as "Mr. Deep Diver."

King Friday mentions that he was once an active deep sea diver himself. In fact, he recovered the pearls in his crown himself on a deep sea dive. Still, he shows no interested in joining the instructor for a dive: "I've given up diving. I just talk about it now."

During the credits, the diving instructor gives several more pieces of jewelry to Mrs. Frogg -- presumably, more items found by Lady Elaine Fairchilde.
