When you are little, it is hard to understand that big people once were little too. When you are young it helps to know that adults grew just the way you are growing, by trying new things, by being scared, by winning and losing.
(For the time when children look to grownups for confirmation, Mister Rogers sings a song of experiences common to all generations, "I Did Too," and also a song of special pride in children's growth, "I'm Proud of You.")
Nobody is good all the time. Good people are just people who try to do what is right. Trying is what counts.
(For those times when good people do annoying things, Mister Rogers sings a song of common foibles "Sometimes People Are Good," -- but also one of common worth, "Everybody's Fancy.")
When people see each other for the first time, they wonder if they will be friends. Sometimes they don't know how to start. You're the kind of person it's easy to like, though. Anybody could be your neighbor and be very glad about it!
(For the time when someone becomes a new neighbor, Mister Rogers sings a song of wanting to reach out, "Won't You Be My Neighbor?" as well as a song that reveals the limits of simply wishing for something, "Wishes Don't Make Things Come True.")
With all the attention a new baby gets it can make you wonder if you are still important too. But there's one thing a new baby never gets. It never gets to be the older one who was there first. There is nobody like you in the whole world and nobody could take your place.
(For the time when a new baby arrives, Mister Rogers sings a song of feeling left out, "When a Baby Comes To Your House" -- but also a song of feeling special and older now, "It's You I Like.")
Everybody gets angry sometimes -- usually at the people they love the most. Children and grownups both can discover healthy ways to show their anger. We're never too old to find new ways of understanding ourselves.
(For the time when anger erupts, Mister Rogers sings a song of channeling impulses "What Do You Do With the Mad That You Feel?" -- but also a song of celebrating relaxed moments, "I Like To Take My Time.")
