Tim: When you watched 1071-1075 (I know you've seen at least 1071 so far), is the traffic light the "old" one with the "large" visors (used in 1001-1070, I think) or the "new" one with the "small" visors (used in 1076-1765, I think)?  If you can't tell the difference, then can you check 1066 (which I know for sure has the "old" one) and any post-1970 episode (all of which I know for sure have the "new" one) and compare to 1071 (if you absolutely do not have time to watch even the opening of 1071 again, can you at least try to take notice in 1072-1075)?  Thanks.

Here's a shot of the light from 1072:

Sorry, i know hardly anything about the traffic light, but could either of you tell from the pic Tim just posted which one this is? Does it look similar to one used from about 1076-1765? I never knew there were two different versions of the traffic light.

One other possible idea: instead of the opening to a post-1970 episode, would it also be an option to check scenes from episodes that show a good glimpse of the traffic light (such as 1460 or 1635) and compare? Since 1635 is a modern episode, Tim obviously doesn't have to check on that.

It's hard to tell from the angle, but I think that is the newer traffic light, with the smaller visors.  Another shot that shows the depth of the visors would make it easier to tell.  Did you compare it to an older and a newer episode?

Tim: if it's not a problem, could you check 1067-1070, to see if perhaps the new traffic light debuted mid-week, rather than in 1071?  We know 1066 has the old traffic light.  It's also possible that 1066-1070 wasn't all shot in order and maybe some episodes have the old traffic light and some have the new traffic light.  I wonder if there could even be some episodes where the traffic light switches between old and new.

Also, since the first 6 models are introduced in 1066-1070, but the Eiffel Tower not until 1080, I wonder if perhaps 1080 could have been shot with 1066-1070, and maybe 1080 has the old traffic light too.  Can you check?  That could explain why the Eiffel Tower model is seen in 1079.

Thanks.

You may need to remind me in a few days but I'll try and get to this as soon as I can. Got a sick kiddo in the house right now so not much getting done... Don't let me forget about this though...

Hope your kid feels better.  When should I remind you again?

Tim:

This is your reminder.  Thanks.

:)  I was actually just thinking about this yesterday. After a busy last few weeks, I'll have some free time this weekend and should be able to take a look at this for you. Thanks for the reminder...

I don't have an eye for the different traffic lights like some of you do but this is the best I can do. Here are shots of the light from the episodes you mentioned with the exception of 1070 -- the copy I have of 1070 has the beginning cut.

mitsguy2001

Thanks for posting those.  It's a little hard to tell from that angle, but it appears that all of 1066-1070 have the old traffic light, and everything starting from 1071 has the new one.  I wonder why they switched after 1 week of a season.  Strange.

Strangely, like on Giving & Recieving 1721, it appears the light was flashing green during the week of 1066-1070. I keep hearing that most other episodes typically had the light flashing yellow, since that meant "slow down." I guess they were aware that other parts of the show (such as Costa's outro music and some NOM stories, ect.) weren't as slow as Rogers was, but if that's the case, i wonder why they only did that w/ 1066-1070 and 1721 but no others? It would be interesting if there's an episode (and sadly, i doubt there is) that opened with the light flashing red! That certainly wouldn't make any sense, since red means "stop" but the camera's still moving!

mitsguy2001

No, I distinctly remember the yellow light flashing in 1066-1070 (no idea about 1721).  I think what you are thinking of is that Tim said that sometimes (such as in 1001) the studio lights reflect off of the green light, making it appear to be on.  I wonder if maybe that was why the traffic light was changed?

But i thought you said it was green, at least on 1066 if not 1067-1070. Didn't you say so in reply #17 of this thread?

Or did i just misunderstand you? And yes, it was indeed green on 1721 (but probably not 1722-1725) because someone else said so and Tim made a note of it on that episode's article.

I'm sorry, that was a typo.  I will correct it.  The traffic light was flashing yellow during the opening of 1066 (and all later episodes), and steady green during the actual episode (and all later episodes).  It seems that in the black and white episodes (at least some of them), the light was always yellow, even during the episode.  When did it switch to green?

The flashing green in 1721 is bizzarre, since in the US, flashing green traffic lights have no meaning.  Was there some explanation for that?  Or was it a production error?  Or maybe the yellow light burned out?
