MRN Schedule 2/19/68 - 9/4/09

Hello, everyone. My name is Nicky. I posted on this board a few weeks ago, and a lot of you might remember me from the yahoo board years ago (I posted there quite regularly from about 2004 - 2006). And I said that I would be posting a schedule of the weekday episodes. I know that a lot of the 9/3/84 - 8/30/96 schedule is posted on this forum, but there are some weeks missing and some of it may be hard to find. So therefore, I'm going to be posting most of those weeks. Also, I've been in touch with Hedda Sharapan who works at the Fred Rogers Company (and who also voiced Mrs. Frogg on MRN), and back in 2007, she mailed me whole September 3, 1984 - Aug. 31, 2007 schedule (but with Sept. 4, 1989 - April 27, 1990 missing). However, of those missing weeks, as well as Feb. 19, 1968 - Aug. 31, 1994, some of those weeks are confirmed either by Hedda or by other sources, and some I'll give either random or logical guesses. All debuts are confirmed. Also, ironically, there are some weeks I'm fuzzy on, and can't seem to locate Hedda's schedules at the moment since they're tucked behind a lot of material at my house, so most of the material even from Sept. 3, 1984 on is from memory. Here's the coding that I'll use in this schedule:

Red: Debut
Green: Last airing (or at least weekday airing)
Bold: Confirmed by Hedda Sharapan or official source
Italic: Confirmed by unofficial source, such as an article
Underline: What's believed to have aired, even though an unofficial source may say otherwise

Everything without a special color or font is a completely random or logical guess. Also, after certain weeks, there might be explanations, in the color or font if there is one, of why certain weeks aired when they did, or other interesting things of note about the airdate. And also, since there are only limited characters, I'll start doing it in parts, and I'll make notes of why I've picked certain stopping points for each part

Starting on May 26, my guess is that the last airings started, and they reran the past three seasons in between season debuts, and I'll explain that theory after certain in between season airings. Also of note, though 1 - 130 debuted uninterrupted, 1 - 65 and 66 - 130 are considered two different seasons.
5/26 - 5/30/69: 1 - 5 (since that week deals somewhat with war, it does make sense for the week of Memorial Day, which until the following year, was observed on May 30 rather than the last Monday in May)

From this point until the end of the pre-79 era, the season premiere was always President's Day, which could easily have been intentional, so that kids could see major episodes like season premieres on a holiday.

Amazingly, this is both the week to air the most times (30) and the only week ever to have all its episodes air in one month (August). But it would never air this late again.

Thanks for posting all this - very interesting. I know this isn't "official" but it does seem like you have a good amount of evidence to back up your theories. I'm surprised that they would have aired B&W episodes in regular rotation after 1001 debuted, but I guess TV Guide doesn't lie.

By the way, assuming this is accurate, it seems that before 1976, the last episode time an episode from the NET building/yellow walls/wainscotting era aired was on 8/18/72. That was still a gap of about three and a half years, so I can definitely see why making 1456-1460 was necessary. Also, assuming it wasn't actually used in 1336, the last previous time that an episode with the "Tomorrow" song aired was 7/25/74, about a year and a half before.

I don't see any harm in airing B&Ws after 1001, as long as it's not too many color episodes, just like they aired 1001 after 1525, and 1066 after 1610.

I've never heard that 1-65 and 66-130 are considered 2 different seasons. I know it was speculated that 66 was when the new set debuted. But Tim said that the new set debuted gradually, and by Episode 21, the set was entirely the new set.

Also, coincidentally, our engagement party was on April 24, 2010; the 40th anniversary of the first airing of 1125!

In that interview that was posted, Betty Aberlin said that they aired some operas on Thursdays so that Jewish kids would be able to watch them if they aired after sundown. However, this was one of only 2 (and the last) operas that aired on a Thursday. Maybe they tried Thursday operas, and decided against them in the future.

Reardon's birthday is the most likely scenario. I don't know about 1977 or 1983, but an opera did air on his birthday in 1988.

That schedule that Hedda sent you had a lot of cross-outs, and is likely not accurate. Also, although it seemed that the parents special about Discipline was (according to the schedule with the cross-outs) scheduled for Sunday, July 4, 1982, it's unlikely it would have aired that day, since PBS stations always air A Capitol Fourth on July 4. Originally, it seemed Play was scheduled for that week, presumably to avoid a parents special on July 4. Also, it's not confirmed that Creativity reran in August.
