I seem to recall an episode (probably from the early/mid 80's) where he showed how he controlled The Trolley. Am I misremembering or did this actually happen? If it did happen, what episode was it? Thanks!

That's actually happened a handful of times throughout the years. You can use the search feature on the site and probably find what you're looking for. If I get a chance, I'll see if I can help you narrow it down.

Okay, that would be great. I think he showed the trolly going into the tunnel and then backing out of the tunnel, and then going back forward again.

I can't tell you anything else about the episode because it was a long time ago when I saw it. It was probably an episode from 1986 or earlier.

One of the episodes where he shows how it works was the first episode of the week about Grandparents (1984) and they go to the Trolley Museum.  He shows how to make it go forward, backwards and faster and slower.  Just saw it today.

The "Grandparents" episode must be the one I saw when I was a kid, then! Thank you!

He's demonstrated the trolley mechanism in at least a few of the early episodes. Originally, the trolley was run by someone offstage. In the early black and whites, the trolley enters and exits from the left tunnel, and originally the tracks ran under Picture Picture. For whatever reason, Picture Picture was "jutted out" to make room for a right hand tunnel, but Fred didn't get the controls himself until later in the yellow wall episodes. (Michael Keaton apparently ran the trolley for the Make Believe segments while he was there) Fred explained in one episode that in reality, he runs the trolley, where in the NOM, it runs "by itself". (Yet another distinction between reality and make believe.)
