THE NEIGHBORHOOD ARCHIVE - All Things Mister Rogers

When Parents Are Away

Description

As children grow, there are times parents must be away from their children -- whether the children stay at home with a sitter or are in daycare. In this video visit, television's Mister Rogers helps children and adults deal with these times. In a typical Rogers style, this video visit contains songs, honest talk, outings to a daycare center and a graham-cracker factory, and, of course, journeys to the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

In that puppet realm, a business trip takes King Friday and Queen Sara Saturday away from their son. As they look for a caregiver to stay with Prince Tuesday, the royal couple experiences mixed emotions -- as does the prince while his parents are gone. For most families, resolving these feelings will be a familiar dilemma.

"Talking about our feelings is one of the best ways to become comfortable with them," says Rogers, "and the people we love are the best people to talk with." MISTER ROGERS: WHEN PARENTS ARE AWAY can help your family talk about times of separation -- and the feelings those times bring.

Color, 1987, 66 Minutes.
