MRN outro music- John Costa
« on: August 20, 2013, 06:46:46 AM »
Something i've always wanted to ask on this forum, but i keep shying out because i understand not everybody on here understands exactly what i'm talking about and either doesn't remember it or don't always get to hear it (since on some home recordings of early episodes it's left out), but moving on:

Does any of you remember the "outro music"? Nearly every episode's closing credit sequence from at least 1969-1996 had Johnny Costa play an upbeat jazzy piano rendition of the closing song (Tomorrow, Good Feeling, ect.; the Good Feeling ones were usually jazzier) and it was always different depending on the episode (and contrary to some exagerations, there were several that did have a slower tempo).
So my question: what are your favorite MRN episode outros? The reason i've always mentioned this is because i just happen to be a huge buff of jazz piano music (Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, ect.), and i love to hear Costa play and find it kinda weird and interesting that it all came from a little kids show. For a long while i've been collecting audio clips of these, recording them with Total Video Recorder and then saving them as files on my HP.

Again, i understand not all of you may know what i'm talking about, especially since i'm usually the only one on this board that ever brings this up. And sorry if this isn't in the right section. Thanks.

(NOTE: Even though i've heard all 250 outros from the 1979-1996 era, apparently i don't have them all at this time. I'm currently missing at least 76 of them including all of the When Parents Go To Work and Fathers & Music ones. Sorry about that.)

I actually particularly love the outros he did for the opera episodes.  They were always a medley of different songs from the operas.  I remember the outros from the post-79 operas the best.  Spoon Mountain, A Granddad for Daniel, and A Star for Kitty were my favorites.

I've just been listening to 1259, 1290 and 1435 lately and they're beautiful, too. But then again, as i said before, my favorites are pretty much endless  ;).

Again, does anyone else (at least whoever understands what i'm talking about) have any favorites? Tim is of course the luckiest one, cause he has access to episodes and outros i never would unless somebody had them on tape (even the banned episodes, lol). I imgaine 1346-1350 had some awesome outro music throughout that whole week (the 1974 and 1975 seasons seemed to have the greatest outro music in my opinion  8), but of course, they're all great, pre-79 or modern).

1437 is one of my all time favorites...especially as it gets towards the very end, the drums and bass get very intense...it has such a great 70's feel to it.
