Sweater Choices by Fred
« on: September 18, 2012, 09:44:56 PM »
Hi all,

I'm a new member here at the board.  I have been a collector and watcher of Mister Rogers Neighborhood for quite a long time.  Fred is the inspiration to my life and helped me to create my own company specializing in the same messages and values he taught on the program.  He changed my life in so many ways and is responsible for the person I am today.

With that being said, I always was fascinated by the choices in sweaters Fred had.  Many of them were made by his mother, but after she passed away in 1984, new styles started to appear.

With that being said, with looking back at the older episodes, it is really bizarre to see how many times Fred would wear his GRAY SWEATER with the black zipper.  Amazingly, that sweater was worn until 1987.  I can't believe how many times it was worn on the program.

What are other peoples favorite sweaters that Fred wore on the program?

From the 1968-1976 episodes, he had many options.

From 1979-1986, we had a limited amount of options:
1.) Yellow
2.) Blue
3.) Gray with black
4.) Gray
5.) Green
6.) Rust
7.) Light Blue (1497)
8.) Red (1463)

From 1987-2001:
1.) Blue
2.) Aqua
3.) Dark Green
4.) Green
5.) Maroon
6.) Light Red
7.) Dark Red
8.) Purple
9.) Tan
10.) Orange

What are everyone's favorites!

I have noticed him wear that gray sweater w/ black zipper, but my favorite was always the red one. That seems to be his famous color.

He seemed to not wear sweaters alot until about 1972 or so. Nearly every episode before that including 1043-1045, 1061 and 1064-1065 is one wear he doesn't wear a sweater at all.

Though i notice a pattern on some episodes. During the 1970 season so far, he usually wore the neon yellow sweater on Friday, usually an episode that ends with 0. Also, in Art & Imaginary Friends, he wears the red sweater on Monday and Friday back-to-back and the deep green one on Wedsnday. The purple and blue ones were switched, with purple on 1644 and 1647 and blue on 1642 and 1649.
Same thing on both 1994 weeks Things To Wear and Going Away & Coming Back. Red on Wedsnday, purple on Thursday and deep green on Friday. Strangely, Monday and Tuesday's sweater colors were switched, with deep green on 1671 and 1677 and blue on 1672 and 1676.

I still wonder why he wore the sky blue/white sweater thrice in 1051-1055, navy blue one thrice on 1176-1180 and deep green one thrice in When Parents Go To Work and why he suddenly changed green sweaters in Josephene The Short-Necked Giraffe?

I also wonder what happened to the Vandyke brown/banana yellow (1022), midnight blue/bisque (1085), cream (1437), neon blue (1497), deep peach (1585) and dark red (1593) ones? Did he still own them even though he no longer wore them on the show? I know he still wore the sky blue sweater after 1986 because i saw a clip of him awhile back attending his mark on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame wearing that sweater and i think that was in the 90's or early 2000's when that event happened.

BTW, not having answered your actual question: i dunno exactly which are my favorite sweaters. That's kinda like asking what's your favorite episodes (two of mine are the Death Of A Goldfish and circus ones) or you favorite jazzy outro music John Costa played at the end of each episode (nearly every episode from at least 1969-1996 traditionally ended with an upbeat jazzy piano solo over the closing credits; 1326, 1430, 1520 and 1663 had a particularly awesome outro piece).

I sorta like the cream (1422, 1437, 1448 and 1452), gray, neon blue (1497), purple (numerous episodes from 1612-1764), pink-orange (1153, 1235, 1273, 1277 and 1293), navy blue (1176-1177, 1180-1181, 1183, 1236, 1389, 1414, 1416 and 1434), teal-ish deep green (1424, 1430, 1446 and 1455) and brown (various pre-79s from 1169-1456 and 1491, 1504, 1525, 1528 and 1538) ones pretty much. They're all beautiful. And my favorite Dress-Up (1991) sweater would have to be the sisal (1639) one.
