Thanks snowpeck for posting all this - really fascinating stuff.   This does seem to confirm that in between new seasons, they'd go back and rerun about three seasons' worth of shows.   I'd guess that from February 15, 1971 through at least February 20, 1976, the schedule posted at the beginning of this thread is accurate, since during those years there were just enough weeks between seasons to rerun exactly 195 episodes.  So in all likelihood, the B&W episodes probably saw their last airings in the summer of 1970.

But keep in mind that although the 1971 season started on Feb. 15, 1971, the 1972 season started a week later, Feb. 21, 1972.  In all likelyhood, the entire 1969, 1970, and 1971 seasons reran, but that still leaves one week unaccounted for.  It is possible that one week of the 1968 season aired.  But it is more likely that one week from either the 1969, 1970, or 1971 season had an extra airing.  Which week, I don't know.  Is there any way that anyone can find out?  What I wonder is, was there a week that they really wanted to air again for whatever reason, or was it so that the season could start on Presidents Day?  I assume the later, since all 1971-76 seasons began on Presidents Day (which, in 1971, was moved to the 3rd Monday of February).

Quote
I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that episodes 1-5 were never rerun.  We now know that it was the only B&W week that didn't air in the May-October 1969 rerun cycle, and we also know that one week was skipped over during the August 1968-February 1969 cycle.   So it stands to reason that 1-5 was also skipped in August 1968, and I highly doubt it was one of the four weeks that aired in May 1970.

That makes sense, since 1-5 was intended to prepare kids for the transition from EEN MRN to national MRN, so it wouldn't make sense to air it again.  Plus, it seems unusually heavy for MRN.

As I've said, I've managed to get access to some of the documents digitized in the Fred Rogers Center at St. Vincent College, but please don't ask me to post the actual scanned documents.  Also, only a small portion of the archive has been digitized so far, so just because a document is in the archive doesn't necessarily mean I have access to it.

How did you gain access to dhat info?  Is there any way that you can gain access to more schedule info?  Thank you so much for posting what you've posted so far.

I'm not sure if there really was a preemption on 8/1/1969.  Various TV listings sources still list an episode on that date. That may have just been a mistake on the schedule.

What episodes do you see listed for that date?

I found a Chicago area paper microfilm that did some episode decriptions in 1970 and it seems that after 1130 aired the first time in 1970 they aired 16-20 then 21-25 and then 26-30 but didn't find anything for the fourth week and not much else was listed for episode decriptions for weeks we don't know of. I don't see what would be controversial about episode 69 in its description for it to be skipped though.

Since June 1-5, 1970 was 46-50, that means that May 25-29, 1970  had to be either 31-35, 36-40, or 41-45.  A case can be made for any of those weeks.  31-35 and 36-40 have an important plot point, since they introduce Sara Saturday.  But can one week air without the other?  41-45 is the opera week.  Since they liked airing operas on or near holidays, and at the time, Memorial Day was May 30 (it was moved to the last Monday of May in 1971), maybe they wanted to air the opera on Friday, May 29?

Can't really reveal that, but that's the only schedule document I've been able to find. If anyone else has found one in the Fred Rogers Archive, please let me know and I'll try to access it.

Haven't seen any listings source that lists a specific episode, just various newspapers that indicate that it wasn't preempted in that city.

I will say this much -- information regarding schedules and historical context to the program should be made available since the series is no more.

By the way, I found the Saturday schedules for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons that another member sent me (I don't have the 2011-12 schedule), so I will post them here:

2009-10 Season
9/5/09: 1465
9/12/09: 1517
9/19/09: 1653
9/29/09: 1756
10/3/09: 1721
10/10/09: 1481
10/17/09: 1476
10/24/09: 1478
10/31/09: 1499
11/7/09: 1500
11/14/09: 1508
11/21/09: 1509
11/28/09: 1475
12/5/09: 1530
12/12/09: 1547
12/19/09: 1548
12/26/09: 1505
1/2/10: 1563
1/9/10: 1574
1/16/10: 1578
1/23/10: 1586
1/30/10: 1716
2/6/10: 1695
2/13/10: 1642
2/20/10: 1709
2/27/10: 1617
3/6/10: 1476
3/13/10: 1478
3/20/10: Voters' choice for Fred's birthday (1500 won)
3/27/10: 1481
4/3/10: 1508
4/10/10: 1509
4/17/10: 1617
4/24/10: 1505
5/1/10: 1499
5/8/10: 1500
5/15/10: 1530
5/22/10: 1547
5/29/10: 1548
6/5/10: 1563
6/12/10: 1574
6/19/10: 1578
6/26/10: 1586
7/3/10: 1642
7/10/10: 1695
7/17/10: 1709
7/24/10: 1716
7/31/10: 1721
8/7/10: 1517
8/14/10: 1756
8/21/10: 1465
8/28/10: 1653

It seems the Satruday episodes didn't follow the annual occasion times much at all, and this season aired only 26 episodes.  Also, because 1500 was the winner of the contest, it aired 3 times (on 11/7/09, 3/20/10, and 5/8/10).  The only episode this season to air exactly once was 1475, which was one of the choices that lost the voters' choice poll (they should have aired it on 5/8/10).

Thanks for compiling the Saturday sceduele, mitsguy. BTW, if it helps any, i remember at least a few episodes that aired during the 2011-2012 season. I didn't watch MRN regularly at the time, so i only watched a few: 1499, 1564, 1576 and 1580. I don't remember exactly when i saw the first 3 (though it was sometime in October and December), but i do think i remember exactly when 1580 aired.

I remember January 13, 2012 because that was Friday, and of course, you know what that means. And the next day, i was working on my MH fan art one early morning with the TV on (i sometimes have the TV on when i'm working and MRN is occasionally one of the shows i have on; not the best idea, but still...). At one point, i had it on Boomerang to watch some cartoons (being an amature cartoonist, i love to watch cartoons at times), then i switched to PBS since Mr. Rogers was gonna be on and it was the episode with Audrey Duck and the poetry-reading gaela, which was obviously 1580. So that implies that 1580 is what aired on Saturday, January 14, 2012.

BTW, something wierd and somewhat cruel i noticed about the Saturday sceduele. All of these episodes are the same ones that are available to watch for free on PBS Kids' website. I notice among the recurrers are Pets (sans 1496), Music, Celebrations, Making Mistakes and The Environment (sans 1616). What a dirty trick, that must explain why PBS Kids (or maybe moreso FRC) refuses to release more post-75 episodes to watch for free.

The other thing that's wrong with this pic is Pets and The Environment airing without 1496 and 1616. Skipping 1616 definately doesn't make any sense whatsoever because, besides being the episode that introduces the "garbage crisis" story arc, 1616 has probbly the catchiest outro music John Costa played in that whole week. And interestingly, it was also (until 1994) the only 90's appearance of Bob Dog and the first time since Feburary 1989 that Rogers wears the blue sweater.

Honestly, i can understand FRC needing the money, but why must the episodes they make free be ones that people have seen over and over again? Adding more post-75s to watch for free is the least they could do for not letting Amazon release more pre-79s for a while. MRN sure isn't as enjoyable these days as it was when it still aired on weekdays (or better yet, when Rogers was still alive), that's for sure. Not even for the little kids.

JCostaThePro: As I have said many times, FCI (I refuse to call it the Fred Rogers Company) is not being run the way Fred would have run it.

I just discovered a newspaper listing that apparently has the four skipped 1969-70 weeks actually airing in 1979 via the Baltimore Sun on newspapers.com, a listing for them airing 1036-1040 the week of October 29-November 2
https://www.newspapers.com/image/377735444/

1051-1055 the week of November 19-23
https://www.newspapers.com/image/377529169

Although what gets interesting is that from there it has 1056-1060 being skipped and goes to 1061-1065 the week of November 26-30
https://www.newspapers.com/image/377542208

Yet it has 1071-1075 airing the week of December 10-14
https://www.newspapers.com/image/377542208

So it appears I have found a break through with only 1056-1060 being skipped in 1979, I will see later when I have more time if it goes into 1981. While the site requires paid membership one can get a free one week trial membership.

Also, what gets interesting is that after airing 1081-1085 the week of December 24-28 it has it jumping to 1101 on December 31 which is as described in the schedule at the start of the post and continuing through to 1125 right before Superheroes debut
