The final episodes August 2001
« on: June 07, 2011, 01:41:52 PM »
Well just to let you know that in three months time, about the end of August I believe, will be ten years that the final episode of Mister Rogers Neighborhood aired.

When that day comes, let's all post a message about that last show?

It's hard to believe it's been ten years. Remind me of that when the anniversary gets closer and if I haven't gotten to the Celebrate the Arts episodes by that point, that would be a great time to do so!

Good idea.

The odd thing was for a long time I thought Mr. Rogers stopped taping new shows in 1993. One day I saw the 'Ready to Read' ones and they seemed much more recent and I was surprised to see that they were from 2000. It wasn't long after that when it was announced that the show would soon be ending and the last episode would be aired.

I intended to tape the last episode but my PBS station at the time was a day behind. They would air the Friday episodes on Monday, so I wound up with the second to the last episode.

Weird how 9/11 happened the week after. The world totally changed after MRN went off the air.

I started grad school at MIT in the fall of 2001.  MIT's newspaper at the time was published on Tuesdays and Fridays (9/11/01 was a Tuesday).  The 9/11/01 issue was obviously written the night before, and had no mention of 9/11 (they had a special issue on 9/12).  What is really coincidental is that the 9/11/01 issue had a cartoon about the end of MRN, and was captioned "A Sad Day in the Neighborhood".  I suspect that if people view that issue now, and especially many years from now, they will assume that cartoon is about 9/11.  I always found that to be an amazing coincidence.  This is a link to the 9/11/01 issue.  Go to page 4 to see the cartoon:
