Does anyone remember a show that Fred produced and Mr. McFeely hosted?  I think it was a reading program.

You might be thinking of maybe a Spring or Fall Drive that the PBS stations do every year.  Some stations go at length to do whatever it takes to get the money in.  Mr. McFeely may have been reading to kids over the air.  That may have given you the impression he had a show.  Or may have been something locally produced at WQED.

No, he actually had a show in the early 80s.  Short run though.

Yes.. There was a short series done by Mr. Mcfeely during the summer of 1982. Tht was the program that preceeded the program Reading Rainbow. That's what Mr. Newell told me once.
