What's Your Favorite Fred Rogers Song?
« on: June 02, 2011, 02:01:48 PM »
I have several - one is from the Children's Corner days - There's a Smile in Your Pocket (that might be considered a Josie Carey song too).   When the Day Turns Into Night and Truth Shall Set Me Free is another good one.

I agree that "The Truth Will Make Me Free" is a great song. The message is powerful, even for adults. "What if I were very very angry, and all I did was sit. And never think about it. What would become of my anger." I also like "I wish that I could look inside the telephone..." and I frequently sing "What Do You Do with the Mad that You Feel" to my co-worker at work, but she gets tired of me singing Mr. Rogers songs...so I'm glad to have this message board as an outlet!  :D

"You are Special."  I think the text gives such a powerful message to people of all ages.

I was always curious about a lyric to that song.  What is a Trunket home?

Here are the lyrics to "I'm Interested in Things." I cut and pasted from the neighborhood archive song list. It does sound like "trunket home." lol

I'M INTERESTED IN THINGS
I wish that I could look inside the telephone
I hear the voice but I wish that I could see
I'm interested in things like the telephone
I'm interested in many many things

I wish that I could look inside our trunk at homeIt's very old and I'm not supposed to look
But I'm interested in things like our trunk at home
I'm interested in many many things

I see the pictures in my book
And some day I'll know what the words all say
If I wait long enough maybe I could cook
Even hot things, or drive the car, or saw the wood
Or clean out the trunk, or run the washing machine
Someday I'll make my way okay

Still I wish that I could look inside big people's things
Especially things that I'm not allowed to see
I'm interested in all those big people things
I'm interested in many many things

But I can wait
And later on you'll see
I'll still be interested
Always interested in many things
In many many things

"It's You I Like."  Hands down.  I sing it to my boys all the time, and it makes them so happy.  It's such an important message.  It's really a love song. . .I love you just the way you are. . .even the parts of yourself you don't like.  Not for what you have or what you do. . .but for what is deep inside you.  Everyone needs to hear that.
"You know, I think everybody longs to be loved, and longs to know that he or she is lovable. And, consequently, the greatest thing that we can do is to help somebody know that they're loved and capable of loving."
- Fred Rogers

I have been thinking about this for a week now since you originally started this thread. I'm still not sure.

Gotta give this one some thought. There are so many of Fred's songs that I like for so many different reasons...

I don't have any one favorite. I like "You've Got to Do It" and "I'm Proud of You". I frequently find myself thinking of those two.

I agree Dais79, It's you I like is such a great song. Amazingly simple and direct, yet doesn't feel like a kiddy song. It's the very heartbeat of the show in my opinion.

Not sure what my favorite would be though. So many to choose from.

Among many others, I think I Like To Take My Time is one of my favorites. I've found that its lyrics are just as relevant to life (if not more so) as an adult as they were as a child.

There really are so many for me. I remember the first time I heard "You've Got To Do It." The arrangement was simple and jazzy.
It was in the episode where the man who made moving black silhouettes visited.
It was so cool. I remember stopping in my tracks to pay attention.
My little babies were watching and that was probably the first episode where I thought, hey, I'm watching this myself.
I've yet to see that show again but wish they'd add it to the Amazon catalog.

The Creation Song is a long-time favorite as is the Mimus polyglottos/Walking Mocking duet.
Fred's own happy birthday song is another favorite fore me but of course, I could go on as I start thinking about it.

My favorite by far is It's You I Like, hence my username. The tune and lyrics are honest, simple, and very beautiful.

It's Such a Good Feeling/The Weekend Song. I also liked 'You Are Special' and the Trolley's theme.

Although I never heard it until finding it on Youtube, the 'Tomorrow' song is also quite good.

It's hard to say, but if I had to pick 5 songs...
1. Won't You Be my Neighbor
2. Good Feeling
3. It's You I Like
4. The Truth Will Make Me Free
5. I'm Interested In Many, Many Things

I also enjoy the Trolley's music, especially from episode 1586.
