Anyone know how come there were so many episodes made that first year compared to the next several seasons?

Probably since there were no old episodes to rerun.

The first 100 eposodes were a combination of two seperate productions. The NOMB segments were filmed in Canada and the in house segments were done in Pittsgurgh.

Almost true.  The 1965-1966 "EEN" episodes were a combination of new "front and back" footage with CBC footage from NOMB spliced in the middle.   The 1967-1968 WQED (NET) episodes were all original.   If you take the number of black and white episodes (130) and divide by two, you get 65, which is the number of episodes they ended up using from 1969 to 1975.  My hypothesis is that they re-ran the original 130 while the 1969 color episodes were being filmed.  Remember, the copyright date doesn't necessarily correspond with the date of airing in most instances.
